+ What is therapy and who is a therapist?
Psychotherapy, or traditional talk therapy, dates back to the 1800s and has been refined by the pioneers of psychology and psychotherapy to its current form. The main types of approaches are psychoanalysis, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, and integrative therapies. We have also seen advancements in the philosophy of transpersonal psychotherapy, which was pioneered by Stanislov Grof and the original psychedelic-assisted therapy research of the 1950s and 60s.
Therapists range in their education levels, licenses, and certifications, but generally it is a broad term for someone who has completed academic counselor training to provide a variety of treatments and rehabilitation modalities for patients.
+ What is psychedelic-assisted therapy?
Psychedelic assisted therapy is the well-regulated use of psychedelic substances by a licensed therapist in a clinical setting that is present to provide support and guidance. MAPS has released their protocol and Yale has released their own psychedelic-assisted therapy manual.
+ What is integration therapy?
This is follow-up treatment after a psychedelic-assisted therapy session to analyze the experience retroactively. Most integration therapy sessions are held the day after the psychedelic-assisted therapy session, but integration therapy can still be useful if a longer gap is required.
+ What conditions can be treated with psychedelic-assisted therapy?
It is important to speak to a licensed therapist about your psychological and psychiatric problems to determine whether psychedelic-assisted therapy is appropriate for you. That said, these are some of the types of issues that are beginning to show success in clinical research treatment:
- Substance Abuse
- PTSD
- Addiction
- ADHD
- Alzheimer’s
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Trauma
- Stress
- Pain
- OCD
- Grief
- Abuse
- Chronic Illness
Every patient is different, and comorbidities must also be taken into consideration. This is why it is important to only take psychedelics when under the care of a licensed therapist.
+ How do I find the right therapist?
MushMaps can help you find the right therapist for you to work with to get the best results from psychedelic-assisted therapy by utilizing the advanced search features of our provider directory.
+ What are the three stages of psychedelic-assisted therapy?
- Consultation: A thorough exploration of your medical and psychiatric history to determine whether you are an appropriate candidate for psychedelic assisted therapy.
- Ingestion: Taking the psychedelic substance orally or by injection under the direct supervision of your therapist. The number of sessions can different based on the condition being treated and the substances being used.
- Integration: Exploring what was learned during the psychedelic sessions.
+ What are the risks of psychedelic-assisted therapy?
The medical and psychiatric risks of taking psychedelic medications legally under the supervision of a licensed therapist are very low due to quality control, dose regulation, and supervision.
+ Are psychedelics safe?
The short answer is, yes. The 2016 Global Drug Survey found that the safest recreational drug was actually psilocybin. While many feel that psychedelics are generally less harmful and safer than “hard drugs” or alcohol, it is important to understand that these substances are NOT for everybody.
While we promote the responsible usage of psychedelics in a controlled medical setting it cannot be overstated that these substances are for people of sound mind who are not predisposed with a mental disorder. While we do not believe in overgeneralizing or denigrating the importance of these therapies, it is essential to discuss these issues with a doctor prior to beginning any treatment.
+ How can I determine if I am an appropriate candidate for psychedelic therapy?
The best way to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for psychedelic therapy is by checking with your physician or by finding a licensed therapist in our provider directory and reaching out directly.
+ Are psychedelic drugs addictive or habit forming?
Generally, no. Psychedelic substances are typically either serotonergic agonists and act upon the 5-HT2A receptor (such as tryptamines with similar structural design to serotonin), or they can act upon dopamine receptors (namely the phenethylamine family which contain mescaline and the 2C series). They have not been shown to cause dependency issues – instead these substances are showcasing positive results including reduced symptoms of substance addiction, increased neuron myelination, and increased neural connectivity. These promising research findings are exciting, especially considering they are also scrutinizingly testing and providing evidence that these substances have medical value with an extremely low potential for abuse.
+ Can psychedelic drugs interact poorly with other medications or substances I consume?
Yes. There is evidence that some psychedelics interact poorly with certain over-the-counter and prescription medications. There are generally two types of psychedelic drugs which will either affect serotonin or dopamine receptors. Contraindications include but are not limited to MAOIs, SSRIs, and any other psychotropic medications pending physician screening. It is important to only use psychedelics under the care of a licensed therapist that has assessed your full medical history including current medications.

+ What is Psilocybin?
Psilocybin is the prodrug of psilocin, the active psychedelic substance in “magic mushrooms.” This entheogen has shown positive results in the treatment of OCD, addiction and depression. While there has been little formal research on its effectiveness, it is one of the safest substances with the fewest side effects according to the Global Drug Survey. It is not available yet for legal therapeutic use. Read More
+ What is Ketamine?
Ketamine is the most popular psychedelic drug used by therapists today due to its current legal status and ability to be prescribed for depression and other conditions. Historically it has been delivered intravenously, though currently esketamine nasal spray is becoming popular as a noninvasive route of administration. Studies have shown significant improvement for patients suffering from severe depression. It is currently the only psychedelic substance that is legally available for therapeutic use. Read More
+ What is MDMA?
MDMA is a phenethylamine and “empathogen” which has shown promising results in psychotherapy for decades. Recently, treating PTSD with MDMA has shown great success in phase 2 clinical trials at abating PTSD symptoms for up to four years. MDMA had even more profound results in phase 3 trials that assess if a treatment works better than others available, with close to 70 participants no longer qualifying for the PTSD diagnosis and close to 90 percent showing reduced symptoms. It is anticipated that MDMA will be approved for legal therapeutic use within the next few years. Read More

+ Are reviews vetted or ever removed?

+ What is a good review?
A good review thoughtfully covers the 3 major criterion and the minimum levels of experiential quality, which service providers are expected to uphold. From a basic and fundamental standpoint, the users’ reviews should explain the professionalism (the quality of facility, and attention to comfort and providing a patient-first environment), integration (how impactful was the practitioner’s services in obtaining therapeutic results), and experience (the overall quality of the therapeutic services and the users’ overall experience) of the service provider. Reviews should be respectful and uphold MushMaps community standards.
